Saskatchewan One Room School Districts

It has been an honour and pleasure to acknowledge these contributors to the One Room School House Project.  It is with pleasure that these schools, history, photos and/or legal land description locations have been added to the Saskatchewan One Room Schoolhouse website.   Thank you very much for these kind submissions.  With the help such as this it is hoped to make this as complete a list of school houses as possible, as well as provide history and reminiscences of the One Room School House era.  Thank You  all of you...

The School Registers for Norman School District 1703 were submitted by Eleanor Kreiser, thank you.

The one room schoolhouse district defined pioneer settlements, often acting as both educational centre and providing room to offer church services until the local church was erected.  Settlers would petition the Department of Education (now the ministry of education) to establish a school district.  If approved, the newly appointed school trustees would hold a meeting to submit at least three names to be selected from for the new naming.  A debenture was applied for, and the schoolhouse would be erected.  In 1871, the Dominion Government surveyed western Canada into townships divided by township and range lines.  Within the 36 section township thusly;  homestead lands were allocated on all even numbered sections (excepting 8 and 26);  Hudson's Bay Company Lands were section 8, 3/4 of section 26 and all of section 26 in every fifth township; Canadian Pacific Railway lands were those odd-numbered sections (excepting 11 and 29);  School lands were sections 11 and 29.

Communities could make use of the land allocated on sections 11 and 29 or sell the land, and the proceeds could go towards purchase of a site more centrally located to the population of school children, or to buy land more appropriate in condition if sections 11 and 29 were not suitable to build a school.  One section is 1 mile (1.6 km) square.  A school yard could range in size from one acre to four acres on average.  There are 640 acres in a square mile or in one section of land.

For Saskatchewan One Room School Houses, which numbered over 5,000 and were operational from 1887 to c1970, and are listed at the  Saskatchewan One Room School House Project.  The Saskatchewan One Room School House Project had been originally uploaded on to the internet via Rootsweb/Ancestry.com and many awesome submitters helped to keep the one room school memories alive.  Rootsweb/Ancestry.copm stated "In cases where we are unable to bring back previous functionality or content, we will explore ways for people who uploaded data to retrieve it if we don’t feel we can put it back online safely."  So the information will not be lost, and will come back!!!!  Please continue to check the progress of Rootsweb/Ancestry.com and when the database, photographs, biographies and reminiscences of students and teachers will be coming back online  In the meanwhile, the Saskatchewan One Room Schoolhouse Project will be returning online here.  https://skschool.site123.me.

The early motto was "a new school house every day for twenty years" School houses were often located every 6 miles apart to make walking to schools easier for the students who were not expected to travel more than 2-1/2 miles to school  School districts were located within a school inspectorate, and visited by a school inspector periodically who offered invaluable advice to school trustees and to the school teacher.  The rural municipalities assessed rate payers with taxes of which a percentage was allocated to the education of the children in the school district.
